Delay Sending Emails With Outlook

Updated: Jul 28, 2023

If you find yourself burning the midnight oil replying to emails, this handy feature can delay sending those out of hours replies until a time of your choosing. Useful if you'd like to maintain the image of professionalism!

You can do this from the Outlook desktop app, Outlook on the web or Outlook mobile app.

In the Outlook desktop app, when composing an email or writing a reply, go to the options tab on the ribbon and choose "Delay Delivery".

If you don't see the options menu, you might first need to choose "Pop Out" to open your message in a new window.

Once you click "Delay Delivery" a new window will appear where you can change the date and time under "Delivery Options" as below. Click close and your scheduled send is set, once you've finished your email, click send and it will wait in your Outbox until the time you specified before sending.

The method above relies on Outlook being open and online when the scheduled time comes, otherwise it'll simply send the email the next time it is online. If you know it's not going to be possible for Outlook to be online at the scheduled time then there's another option...

The Outlook web and mobile apps can perform scheduled sending of email regardless of whether Outlook is open or not.

For Outlook on the web go to https://outlook.office.com simply compose your email and choose the drop down arrow next to the send button. Select your scheduled send date and time and hit Send!

For the Outlook mobile app, select the three dots at the bottom of your message and select "Schedule Send" to choose your options.

The emails will be sent at your scheduled time, even if you're laid back with a mojito in the sun!
